Regarding the tragedy last Friday in Newtown, I've been receiving words of wisdom  via email from a variety of sources. Here is a quote from Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers). I thought it was really helpful, especially for parents with young children:
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of "disaster," I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world."

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who lost loved ones in the Newtown school shooting. As a parent of school-age children, I found myself wondering: what should I tell my kids?, how can I  comfort them?, how can I keep them safe? Below are some links that provide useful information for these and the many other questions and feelings we are all experiencing. In addition, courtesy of A Healing Trail Massage Center in Harwinton, "Here is a meditation recording for you and your family to use. Bring them together, sit down, turn off all the electronics and most of the lights, close your eyes and relax for 20 minutes together. This recording brings elements of PEACE as well as strength. Heal and help others heal!"

In peace,

In addition to the children who were directly affected by events, news of this frightening tragedy will be difficult for all kids to understand. The following resources offer some guidance.

Dealing with Trauma

Holiday shopping is in full swing, which also means lots of holiday advertising! We know young children are easily influenced by the media and when bombarded with so many commercials it can be difficult for families to determine which toys would be the best choices. We want to choose gifts that are fun, hold our child’s interest, and encourage creativity and learning. With all the hype, must haves, and new technology, what should we choose? Dr. Stevanne Auerbach’s article “Why This Toy?” offers some helpful advice. You can find it and many other great resources on the NAEYC For Families website at http://families.naeyc.org. Scroll down to Learning & Development to see the article. Happy holidays!
